On 26 July 1953, the assault on the Moncada Barracks by 135 young Cuban revolutionaries became the symbol of the Cuban people’s uprising against the Batista dictatorship, imperialist domination and exploitation. The city of Santiago de Cuba, home to the Moncada Barracks, had already witnessed the first flame of rebellion against Spanish colonial rule. On the centenary of Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed’s birth, the young revolutionaries marched on Moncada. They sought to complete the struggle for independence he had begun. Their action marked the beginning of a new era. It united Cuba’s struggle for national liberation with the cause of socialism.<\/p>\n

The assault on the Moncada Barracks by Fidel Castro and his comrades did not achieve their immediate objective, but the first spark of one of the twentieth century’s finest revolutions had already been struck. The flame lit at Moncada had already taken root in the hearts of the Cuban people. Batista’s prisons failed to crush the determination of the revolutionary leadership. That determination grew stronger, reorganised in the Sierra Maestra, spread across the country and led Cuba to the triumph of the Revolution on 1 January 1959.<\/p>\n

Today, Cuba faces the harsh consequences of the imperialist blockade while waging a difficult and distinctive struggle. The spirit of 26 July remains its greatest source of strength. Its enduring lesson is clear: no matter how severe the conditions, the creative power and determination of the people can overcome even the darkest moments. In this sense, the legacy of 26 July belongs not only to the Cuban people; it belongs to every revolutionary who stands with the Cuban people, fights US imperialism and works to ignite the flame of revolution at home.<\/p>\n

On the National Day of Rebellion, we honor the revolutionary vanguard cardres who lit the path to the Cuban Revolution. We salute the people of Cuba as they courageously defend their lives, their sovereignty and their Revolution against imperialist barbarism.<\/p>\n

Long live 26 July!<\/strong> <\/p>\n ***<\/p>\n <\/p>\n El fuego encendido el 26 de julio sigue iluminando el camino<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n El asalto al Cuartel Moncada llevado a cabo el 26 de julio de 1953 por 135 j\u00f3venes revolucionarios cubanos se convirti\u00f3 en el s\u00edmbolo del levantamiento del pueblo cubano contra la dictadura de Batista, la dominaci\u00f3n imperialista y la explotaci\u00f3n. Santiago de Cuba, donde se encontraba el cuartel, hab\u00eda sido tambi\u00e9n la ciudad donde, a\u00f1os atr\u00e1s, se encendi\u00f3 la primera llama de la rebeli\u00f3n contra el colonialismo espa\u00f1ol. Los j\u00f3venes revolucionarios que marcharon hacia el Cuartel Moncada emprendieron esa lucha coincidiendo con el centenario del nacimiento de Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed, con el prop\u00f3sito de culminar la guerra de independencia iniciada por el l\u00edder independentista. Su acci\u00f3n pas\u00f3 a la historia al abrir el camino hacia una nueva etapa en la que la causa de la liberaci\u00f3n nacional de Cuba se unir\u00eda al socialismo.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Cuando el asalto de Fidel Castro y sus compa\u00f1eros al Cuartel Moncada, la mayor instalaci\u00f3n militar del pa\u00eds, fracas\u00f3, el mundo a\u00fan no era consciente de que estaba presenciando la primera chispa de una de las revoluciones m\u00e1s hermosas del siglo XX. Sin embargo, el fuego encendido en Moncada hab\u00eda encontrado eco en el coraz\u00f3n del pueblo cubano. Las c\u00e1rceles de la dictadura de Batista no lograron doblegar la voluntad de los dirigentes revolucionarios; esa voluntad creci\u00f3 y se fortaleci\u00f3, reorganiz\u00e1ndose en la Sierra Maestra y en todo el pa\u00eds, hasta conducir a Cuba a la Revoluci\u00f3n del 1 de enero de 1959.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Hoy, mientras Cuba atraviesa un dif\u00edcil y singular per\u00edodo de lucha bajo las duras consecuencias del cerco imperialista, afronta esta etapa inspir\u00e1ndose en el legado del 26 de julio. El legado m\u00e1s importante del 26 de julio es la certeza de que, incluso en las condiciones m\u00e1s adversas, la voluntad creadora y la determinaci\u00f3n del pueblo pueden desgarrar la oscuridad.
