I salute the steadfastness of the Palestinian resistance and strongly protest against the Zionist aggression and the so-called peace that U.S. imperialism seeks to impose on the people of Palestine. I consider it a duty to begin with this statement.

Let us also send our greetings and wishes for victory to socialist Cuba, which continues to resist the blockade on behalf of all of us.

Today, I would like to reflect on why we — those of us who believe another world is possible — have fallen short in the realm of ideological struggle. I will attempt to offer some answers to this pressing question.

And I would like to begin by playing the role of the devil’s advocate. Perhaps our problems began with the slogan “Another world is possible.” In one sense, it is a perfect slogan — and it remains so today. Yet as everyone began to assign their own meanings to what that “other world” should be, the very notion itself began to lose clarity. For instance, another world is not merely a better world. Despite all that nature offers us, and despite the vast accumulation of human knowledge and experience, the world we live in today is not a good one. It is a terrible world, and we seek to free ourselves from this unjust world.

Another world is indeed possible, and that “other world” can be defined by no concept more fitting than equality.

To put it more concretely, another world is one in which classes and exploitation have been abolished. The challenges we face in reaching this goal do not lessen its urgency or its relevance.

What weakens the idea of another world today is the disappearance of the only point of reference that can define and make such a world possible. I will not dwell on the reasons for this — it is a complex issue and requires extensive discussion. Yet there is a reason why I begin my speech from here.

If we, who struggle against exploitation, all forms of inequality, imperialism, racism, and militarism, are not effective enough — if we cannot break through the ideological and cultural siege of multinational monopolies — one of the reasons is that what we actually want has become unintelligible. For the billions of people who suffer and are discontent in today’s unjust world to take an interest in the world we aspire to, amid the overwhelming bombardment of data, we must possess a clear and disciplined sense of purpose.

It is evident that all values that are vital to us — such as freedom, peace, progress, and independence — have today lost much of their meaning and credibility within strategies that fail to openly question the mechanisms of exploitation that dominate most of the world. One of the most serious consequences of defending these values while accepting those very mechanisms of exploitation — or of believing that such values could weaken them from within — is the adoption of the ideological tools and language of the imperialist system itself. This very set of tools and language entirely excludes the possibility of such a world itself.

We are holding this meeting as part of a festival organized in honor of the proud legacy of two revolutionary and communist publications. Since the 19th century, despite repression and all kinds of adversity, the field of publishing has continued to find ways to amplify the independent voice of the oppressed classes, both politically and ideologically. Today, however, our production aimed at interpreting and transforming the world — in journalism, mass communication, and even in the communicative practices required by revolutionary struggle — has become almost entirely dependent. Although this dependency is partly linked to material conditions and the level of technological development, it ultimately arises from a conviction — one that has spread even within our own ranks — that today’s world cannot be changed in essence. It may seem almost natural that capitalism, as a system that permeates everything and turns all things into commodities, has also conquered the field of communication. Yet building our own tools and language in the information wars — and thereby creating an independent space — is possible only through a strategy that directly confronts invasive capital.

An alternative that remains confined within a communication sphere entirely shaped and controlled by multinational monopolies cannot truly represent “another world.” When we fail to root this alternative in a concrete, material foundation, we inevitably become trapped within an informational and communicative environment dictated by imperialism. But is this outcome truly inevitable? Does the need to adapt to technological developments necessarily condemn us to such a climate?

We must answer this question with an unequivocal no.

The first condition for resisting the absolute hegemony of imperialism in the realm of information and communication is to reject its own criteria of success. Just as a revolutionary movement confined to the parliamentary arena suffocates when it cannot raise its head beyond the “vote count,” so too do those who measure today’s media solely by quantitative indicators of consumption — by the flow and volume of information — render themselves incapable, ideologically, of creating a genuine counterpole. This does not mean, of course, that such media platforms should be abandoned altogether. It is possible to open cracks within them, to appropriate and repurpose these platforms for the benefit of humanity — but only according to our own principles.

It may now be necessary to move beyond abstraction and to formulate, in concrete terms, the practical steps that can be taken.

To begin with, it must be emphasized that it is impossible to create any meaningful resistance against the ideological domination of the imperialist-capitalist system by seeking solutions within that very system. The claim that “we are too weak to develop alternatives outside the system” is unfounded; by the same logic, one could just as easily argue that we are too weak to build resistance even from within the system itself.

The exploiting classes and imperialism have shaped the fields of information and communication not only to facilitate lies and distortions, but also to undermine the values that uplift and advance humanity, thereby accelerating decay. This structure is not, and can never be, neutral. Therefore, the assertion that “any ideology can make use of this structure in its own way” must be treated with caution.

One of the main consequences of the Left’s adoption of the system’s tools and language—both politically and ideologically—has been its inability to mount an ethical challenge at the moments when it was most urgently needed. Today, when the impoverished masses look to the Left, they do not see a force grounded in truth, free from pragmatism and image fetishism, and rooted in principles and advanced moral values. This is a profoundly serious problem. One of the Left’s foremost tasks must therefore be to reestablish an advanced ethical framework within its ranks. In this regard, the vast accumulation of knowledge and principles developed in Cuba even before the revolution stands as a powerful example.

While we must avoid archaic and completely isolating approaches—such as rejecting social media and the fully digitalized media controlled by multinational corporations—it is essential to preserve and revitalize print publications, theaters, cinemas, concert halls, and all forms of face-to-face communication. These are indispensable for the development of human beings as social creatures. Persistent and creative efforts must be devoted to this task. The cost of surrendering to today’s dominant media in the name of modernity is immense.

More importantly, collective efforts must be directed toward using the technological possibilities created by humanity’s combined manual and intellectual labor in ways fundamentally different from those of capitalism. A different set of tools and a different language are indeed possible, and when international resources are pooled, tangible progress can be achieved step by step. To assume that modest initiatives and incremental advances cannot yield results—simply because multinational corporations have reached an advanced level—is akin to believing that the oppressed are powerless before massive armies armed with weapons of mass destruction, tanks, and aircraft.

Just as books, newspapers, and magazines were banned in the past, today a handful of monopolies impose censorship on alternative viewpoints through arbitrary means. While striving to create freer platforms of our own, we must simultaneously build a collective international resistance to these oppressive measures. When criticism and exposure, legal action, and boycotts are well organized, they not only produce tangible results but also lend greater legitimacy to alternative media channels.

In light of all these considerations, I would like to emphasize that the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) will continue to fulfill its responsibilities with determination and creativity, within the limits of its modest means.

A world worth living in is possible — and in that world, there is no place for exploiting classes. The future of humanity is communism.

***
