OUR COUNTRY and the WORLD NEED TO GET RID OF NATO IMMEDIATELY
The bill regarding Sweden’s accession protocol to NATO will be discussed in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey today. This issue is an embarrassment for the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
Following the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine War, NATO’s attempt to recruit new members in Northern Europe gained great momentum. The membership of two non-NATO countries in the region, Sweden and Finland, quickly came to the fore.
The first result of the process, which was carried out with unprecedented rapidity, was Finland’s admission to NATO in March this year. Unfortunately, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey gave a very bad account on this issue and a positive opinion was expressed for the membership of this country, yet not a single negative vote was cast. Following Finland, Sweden’s membership will also cause the war environment and political tensions in the region to continue. Because Western imperialist powers, especially the USA, are in favor of maintaining the tension in the region.
Another dimension of the issue is that the NATO membership processed of these two countries are treated as a trump card by the AKP government. The issue was used both as material for nationalist discourse in domestic politics and as a trump card in negotiations with imperialist powers. Thus, our country continues to be a part of imperialist politics.
However, NATO is nothing but a terrorist organization. From the beginning, it has brought peace neither for its members nor for the people of other countries. On the contrary, it terrorized and carried out massacres in the countries it targeted. It has intervened in the internal affairs of other countries, both by waging direct war and taking military initiatives, or by using counter-guerrilla tactics and tools such as assassinations and coups. They did not allow the workers to raise their voices and did not hesitate to make the bloodiest attempts.
The world needs to get rid of NATO immediately. The first step, for our country and other members, is to exit NATO. The Grand National Assembly of Turkey’s Foreign Affairs Commission should put Turkey’s exit from this bloody organization, not NATO’s expansion, on its agenda. The Communist Party of Turkey has defended this from the very beginning and will continue to defend it. Because NATO only causes wars, bloodshed, and human suffering.
