Twelve years ago, one of the greatest uprisings in our country’s history erupted in Taksim Gezi Park.
We witnessed a powerful resistance in which the people flooded the streets undeterred, filled the squares of every city, and stood tall against relentless police violence ordered by the AKP government.
The June Resistance, which began in Gezi and spread across the country, earned its place in history as one of the clearest proofs that even in the darkest times, hope in our people and our country must never be lost.
Now, twelve years later, the same people who rose up and refused to bow down during those days still remain a source of fear for the representatives of this corrupt system.
That fear hasn’t ended — and it never will!
Twelve years after June, the uprising that took place on March 19 this year once again proved two things: why the fear felt by the representatives of this system is entirely warranted, and how real the legacy of the June Resistance remains for our people.
As our country is once again being rapidly pushed toward a major crossroads—an even deeper one this time—we must recall the spirit of those June days.
With both government and opposition working hand in hand, a grand consensus is being built on behalf of capital and steps are being taken toward a new constitution, meant to serve as the official seal of this alliance. And it’s clear what this will mean for our people: more darkness, more poverty.
Those who today dream of a neo-Ottoman revival, who seek to erase our country’s Republican legacy, who want to make the rule of religious sects and holdings untouchable—must once again be met with the will of the people, just as they were during the days of Gezi.
We must take to heart the most important lesson of June: A united and organized people can achieve far more than what was revealed in that uprising—they can put an end to this entire corrupt system.
With faith in our ability to succeed,
We salute once again, on its 12th anniversary, the great uprising of our people—
the June Resistance!
