The European Communist Movement convened in Athens with the hosting of the Communist Party of Greece.
Delegates from the Party of Labour of Austria, the Communist Workers’ Party – for Peace and Socialism (Finland), the Communist Revolutionary Party of France, the Communist Party of Greece, the Workers Party of Ireland, the Communist Front (Italy), the New Communist Party of the Netherlands, the Communist Party of the Workers of Spain, the Communist Party of Sweden, the Swiss Communist Party, the Communist Party of Türkiye and the Union of Communists of Ukraine attended the conference.
During the meeting, the joint statement prepared for the European Parliament elections to be held on 6-9 June was worked on. Dimitris Kutsumbas, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Greece, presented the draft text of the declaration, in which the themes of struggle against the European Union, war policies and the aggravating attacks on the working class came to the fore. The declaration will be published in the coming days.
After Kutsumbas’ presentation, each of the parties made presentations on the experiences in their own countries. TKP Party Council Member Gözde Kök took the floor on behalf of TKP in the session where contributions on the imperialist character of the European Union, current conflicts, attacks on vested rights and the role of communists in working class mobilisations were presented. In the presentation, after a summary of TKP’s position on the European Union and Turkey’s journey regarding the access to European Union, information was given on the current situation of the working class in Turkey, the experience of working class struggle and the work of communists.
“The task of deciphering the EU continues”
TKP’s contribution to the conference reminded that the relations established by European capital with Turkey constitute one of the most important reasons for the great impoverishment in Turkey in parallel with the loss of rights of the European working class, while TKP’s task of deciphering the EU continues. The presentation also pointed out that the struggle of educated and uneducated workers migrating from Turkey should be linked to the struggles of the working class in Europe. It was explained that TKP advocates state ownership against the invasion of foreign monopolies in the country and the termination of all agreements with the imperialists. It was emphasised that the main channel for strengthening the socialist option in Turkey is through the organisation of TKP within the working class. Finally, the experience of the Breathe Down the Bosses’ Neck Communication Solidarity and Struggle Network (PE), which was put into action by the TKP with the need to develop a creative organising style that takes into account the precarious and flexible working regime, the changing structure of workplaces and new working conditions, which have become a major problem all over Europe, was shared and examples of workers’ resistances that PE has been a part of in various forms in the recent period were given.
