Statement by Peace Association of Turkey on Turkish military operation in Northern Iraq

26 February 2008

The Peace Association of Turkey made a statement about the latest military operation made by the Turkish armed forces in Northern Iraq:

The government and the Chief of General Staff are lying through their teeth

Turkey is rapidly being dragged into a war

In the last four months, we have been saying that the high traffic between American, English, Israeli, Iraqi and Turkish high-rank political and military leaders was not a good sign. We were not mistaken. With the joint decision of AKP government and the Chief of General Staff, Turkish Armed Forces have crossed the border "to an unknown" under the guise of fighting against the PKK, but in fact in the cause of protecting and looking out for the imperialist interests.

The prime minister is saying "The scope and limits of the operation are obvious. The target is the PKK camps in Northern Iraq". The Chief of General Staff is confirming the prime minister and adding "Turkish Armed Forces will withdraw from the region as soon as the planned targets are reached".

And we are saying that

The incursion of Turkish Armed Forces into Iraqi territories has nothing to do with finding a solution to either Turkey's or the Middle East's problems. This operation has launched an era, in which our country will frequently be put in front of a line of fire by the imperialist countries, particularly by the USA.

The prime minister is stating "I would like this operation to be beneficial for our nation, fraternal Iraqi nation and for peace in the region". The Chief of General Staff seconds him and says "The operation is assessed to be a contribution to stability and national peace in Iraq by preventing the use of the region as a permanent and secure base zone for the terrorists".

And we are saying that

Who will contribute to peace in the region? The ones who think that not siding with the USA in the invasion of Iraq "was the worst disaster that Turkey has ever witnessed"?

Who is talking about "peace"? The ones who sided with Israel along with the USA in every attack by Israel against the peoples in the region, particularly against Palestine and Lebanon?

Who will ensure "stability"? The ones who were the messengers of threats of the USA, European imperialists and Israel against Syria and Iran?

This operation can by no means bring "peace" or "stability" to our country or to the peoples of the Middle East in any form.

The Prime Minister and the Chief of General Staff, who in their statements about the operation, mention "legitimate rights of Turkey emanating from the international law" and "importance they attach to the territorial integrity of Iraq", change their discourse when legitimate rights of others emanating from the international law and territorial integrity of others are in question; particularly if those others are the ones who do not line with their imperialist big brothers.

As if they did not ally with the imperialists and the collaborator governments supported by those imperialists in all stages of the disintegration of Yugoslavia; as if they did not participate in 78-day long air strikes against Serbian cities by the NATO even if there was no UN resolution that supported this type of action in 1999...

As if they did not engage in military operations in the cause of protecting and looking out for imperialists interests in dozens of countries from the Balkans to Africa, from the Middle East to Afghanistan…

Lastly, as if, in the act of detaching Kosovo from Serbia, they felt like they would be good use for the imperialist centers by being "one of the first countries to recognize" Kosovo.

We cannot expect the people to stop the disintegration of this country because they are the ones who were strong supporters of the disintegration of many countries, particularly in the Balkans and the Caucasus, by the imperialists but who, on the other hand, seeing flags with yellow, red and green colors in their own capital city, still develop a paranoia of "propaganda of the separatist organization".

The Peace Association of Turkey opposes sending Turkish Armed Forces to cross-border missions for any reason; thus demands recalling all troops who crossed the border back and demands withdrawal of all soldiers who are already in a mission abroad.
